Curious, that this seems to be a 'try', because the author solution, as communicated by the Dutch chess collectors’ group “Motiefgroep Schaken” in a booklet on Chess related gravestones, is:
"1.Kc9 or 1.Kd9; the king goes to heaven, and his rival is mated"
