When preparing an article about Caldas Viana, the leading Brazilian player and problemist of late XIX/early XX centuries, I came accross with this interesting, curious twomover:
J. Caldas Viana
Caissana Brasileira 1898 (first publication unknown)
(= 12+6 ) #2
The solution of course is 1.Da3 zz. and: 1...Lany 2.Dc3#; 1...Tany 2.Da7#; 1...Kxe3 2.d4#; 1...Ke5 2.d4#
The curious point is that the last two variations present two completely different mate positions, in fact two distinct pin-mates, arousing from the same move 2.d4:
a)(= 12+6 )
b)(= 11+6 )
In the first variation, the rook is pinned and the pawn itself gives the mate (the D+P battery doesn't fire); in the second variation, the bishop is pinned and the D+P battery delivers the mate.
I confess I don't remember of any other problem that features this changement of pin-mates with the same mating move, and I ask if someone could help me giving other examples. | | No more posts |
