The 1st Youth Chess Composing Challenge 2016

The first competition in the frames of 59th WCCC (announced January 31st) will be devoted to youngest chess composers (born 1998 and after). The YCCC consists of three thematic tourneys (#2, h#2 and endgames), with 5 months time for composing. The themes were suggested by distinguished composers Ivo Tominić, Fadil Abdurahmanović and Ofer Comay, who will take the roles of judges. Aside from the competitive and creative results, the event will produce the Gallery of participants, with their photos, selected problems and biographic data.

Very nice initiative. Are you planning to have money prizes, or some kind of individual champions? The reason I am asking is because I saw that joint compositions are not allowed. It is not my business, of course, but I find the concept of composing jointly very rewarding and much more interesting than solo work, especially for young composers. Also, I would like to see the emphasis on compositions, not on composers, even if only juniors are involved. Anyway, I hope the tourney is very successful. I will try to advertise it.

Allowing joint compositions, or not? There were both options, and my reasoning was following: 1. joint composing is not popular at all among these youngsters (and they could hardly find adequate partners in their countries). 2. kids could find it unfair if two guys beat single one in a competition.
One of the aims of the Gallery of participants was to allow and stimulate them to connect. This way they could really get into joint composing one day.

Thank you, Marjan. I understand that this is a very special occasion and an interesting competition. Your reasoning makes sense. Let's hope that whatever the conditions are, they will attract new composers and establish a new event in the calendar.

As the judge Ivo Tominic (Group A) pointed out, quantitative extension would be welcome, not only in number of mixed pair of S promotions. Each pair may extended with additional S promotions, like 1W + 2 Bl, 1Bl + 2W, etc.
