Q. @ 2#.
In the example, remove the Bb1.
1.Nc1 Bc4
Are now the mates Nd3 and Ne2 thematic?
(Ignore that Bc4 parries nothing :-)

According to theme definition: Yes (both are battery and shut-off mates, though dualistic in this sketch)

About section B (h#2).
The example shows direct batteries. Are indirect batteries also thematical ?

Yes!
The judge gave an explanation: "all kinds of batteries are allowed, including indirect and masked ones"!

Another question by one composer:
"Is Bristol clearance in key of #2 thematic opening of black line? Is anti-Bristol in mating move thematic way to close of black line?"

Concerning the h#2 theme:

Is this single solution problem thematic?
UA
(= 5+2 )
h#2
1.Qc1 Rd2 2.Qc6+ Se6#
WR acts as front piece of an indirect battery on the 1st move and rear piece of a direct battery on the 2nd move.

And what about this one?
UA
(= 6+6 )
h#2
1.Bc6 R:d2+ 2.Kd5 Sb3#
WR is front piece on the 1st move and rear piece on the 2nd move of different direct batteries.

Uri: Is this single solution problem thematic? ...

Since no official answer has been given yet here's my opinion:
According to the definition of theme single solution is thematic. However, if we "read between lines" it's clear that battery mates are expected in at least two phases. Moreover, it's hard to beleive that single phase problems would stand any chance for a good result against the multiphase ones.

Answers by the judges:
Concerning #2 all kinds of line-opening and line-closing are allowed.
In h#2 battery means battery-mate.

Corrected version:
http://www.matplus.net/pub/zip/Belgrade_2008.pdf (1318 KB)

Only three pages (programme, list of participants and one solving table) have been changed.

BIT-2008 awards remained unchanged.
