Fairy Kings tourney (17 Jan. 2011)

The 'Fairy Kings' tourney was launched some time ago (Mat Plus Spring-Summer 2009) and the complete article Mark Ridley wrote for the magazine, together with the tourney announcement, can still be read and downloaded on Mat Plus website at the following address: http://www.milanvel.net/pub/FairyKings.pdf

Composers are reminded that the tourney theme tolerantly requests any sort of problem presenting at least one fairy condition or piece that have been shown in Mark Ridley’s present article. New fairy conditions involving fairy Kings of any sort are also welcome.
Thus the new fairy conditions introduced in this year's Sake tourney (Half-Check condition) and in the first Bulgarian Wine tourney (KoBul Kings) are also thematic.

The tourney deadline is 17th January 2011.

The article by Mark Ridley is so nice. My congratulations to the author for a well researched and wonderfully written essay. I am sure it will be a valuable reference for the future. Even those who are not participating in the tourney would benefit from reading it. Thank you Mark.

Though my friend Mark's article is indeed well-researched, I have found quite a few omissions. I'm encouraging Mark, after judging his tourney, to write a supplementary article which covers any new Fairy kings arising from his tourney, as well as those earlier types he accidentally overlooked.

It would be interesting to know what other types of Fairy Kings Mark missed.

However I noticed some typos in the solution to problem 44! The second black move should read 2...Qb6 and white move five should correctly read 5.exh8K.

The award of the Fairy Kings tourney - Mark Ridley 50 JT - was published by Milan on December 31st, 2012. You can find it here http://www.matplus.net/pub/ul/MarkRidley50JT.pdf

After 3 months, it is time to announce that the award must be slightly changed.
Problem 89 by Paul Raican was awarded 1st Honourable Mention in Section A but a cook in 12 moves was found: 1. e3 d6 2. Ke2 Bg4+ 3. Kxg4 g5 4. a4 Qd7+ 5. Kxg5 Qxa4 6. Sc3 Qxa1 7. Se4 Sf6 8. Sg3 Qxc1 9. Kh4 Se4 10. Kg4 Qxd1+ 11. Kc8 Qh5 12. Sxh5 f5 (diagram).
No correction was provided by the author within the 3 months delay. This is why it is excluded from the award and problem 83 by Juraj Lörinc is now awarded 1st Honourable Mention.

We will try to publish soon a PDF final version of the award, which will also include the correction of a few typos.
