So, it was like this: Herbert Ahues (yes, THAT Ahues)
showed me a problem, and the solution was placing a
second chessboard (or, rather a the nine men morris
side of a combined board - I own one) diagonally on
the problem such that a piece had an additional field
to go.
As soon as I realized that Ahues never touched fairy
chess in 90 years, I woke up screaming.
Dammit, why haven't I ever dreamt of a sex orgy in
my whole life? It's argueable that chess is better :-) | | (2) Posted by James Malcom [Thursday, Apr 8, 2021 16:19] | I had a strange dream myself last night, something involving the North Pole and magic. Composing in a lucid state saves you time anyway. It may even inspire! | | (3) Posted by Andrew Buchanan [Friday, Apr 9, 2021 10:56] | Usually if I take a new game very intensely, I may have a night where I am kind of dreaming about it. I guess that there is lots of indexing and optimization going on in the subconscious, and my sleeping awareness is just in the penumbra of this. After this experience, my play at the game seems better: I've made some kind of "level break".
More generally, I can't recall any great insights from my sleep, but I find the first few hours in the morning are often the most fertile for new ideas etc. Showers are particularly fruitful.
When I am dreaming, skills such as spatial reasoning, mathematical reasoning and even reading are not good. (It was never fun taking exams in my dreams, as I couldn't read the questions.) But at some other levels of thought, particularly about people in my life, I feel there is insight in dreams, and I can reach thoughts that I could not otherwise access. A few times, I've had cool melodies come to me in my sleep, but I've no way to write these down. Sometimes apparently wise thoughts have been told to me, sometimes channeled by the voice of a friend in my head. I have a trusted friend in London who has several times appeared in my dreams in this way. Once I woke up and wrote an email from God.
I composed one chess problem entirely while asleep on a plane. I really should publish it properly, but I have so much backlog heh. | | (4) Posted by edderiofer [Friday, Apr 9, 2021 16:05] | Years ago, I composed a problem in my sleep wherein White made five consecutive captures with a pawn, making various different threats and eventually giving mate to the king on the fifth capture, while Black tried to assault White's heavily-protected king to no avail.
When I woke up and tried to recreate it, I found that the problem required at least an 8x12 board to place the pieces (and I suspect it wouldn't have been sound anyway). | | (5) Posted by seetharaman kalyan [Friday, Apr 9, 2021 18:12] | 8x12 board problems are also publishable | | (6) Posted by Hauke Reddmann [Sunday, Feb 6, 2022 17:47] | Methinks I have subconscious issues with fairies,
as I just read it as "punishable" :-)) | | No more posts |
