I'm no retro buff, but methinks e4 is better than d4
because in a SPG the fastest mate is 5.e4# but 6.d4#. :-)
Can you verify?
Can you give SPG for all 20 white opening moves?
Since Black is OK, also for all 20 black ones?

P.S. For teh lulz I constructed a 2# with the solution 1.d4 Sf6 2.Bg5#.
(No bonus points if you instantly recognize why it's necessarily bad.
The 2#, not the Trompowsky opening :-)

What do you mean by SPG, 1.e4 d6 2.Qh5 Kd7 3.Se2 Ke6 4.Qg6+ Ke5 5.d4#?

OK, so d4 isn't worse than e4 :-)
Clarification note: SPG here only means "shortest",
I (naturally) don't require uniqueness here.
As I said, I'm no retro buff and merely didn't
*find* a 5.d4# game (on the fly).
