one of the thematic mates is the same W piece mating on the same square but coming from different squares? Trying this for the first time, just making sure I've got the rules down properly!

Great interpretation, ehem: A 2*3 Zagoruiko. The mates
don't really change except they are done by a different piece.
Since chess pieces are fermions, *nothing* changes.
But yet, HR-as-judge would consider this as cheating, also
in your scenario.
