Number of problemists worldwide?

Especially interesting would be how that number has changed
over time, but alas, where to find reliable input data?

(This also holds for the number of chess problems.)

If I understand ZK well, he means "??"

Well, I must send apologizes.

It was a real "private" joke. Sorry Hauke.

For (very) personnal reasons, it happens to me to get troubled when people are "counted", that's why I felt the need to send a little joke about "the reason why..."

Sorry again.

We feel the same here in Germany, so no need to apologize. Although the protests were not as big as 25 years ago, there were some massive ones when the government decided to count people again.
I still think that Germany never should have a census again, for obvious reasons.

I suppose it depends what you mean by a 'problemist'.
If you define it as someone who's interested enough that they subscribe to a problem magazine, then probably not more than a couple of thousand.

There are only 579 problemists in the world.

@Jacques: I dish out so much, it would be pathetic if I couldn't
take a harmless joke myself. But no, I don't intend to spam anybody.
My opus majorum isn't even remotely written. (If I remember
correctly, someone, not necessarily a problemist, asked when
his "Best of" collection comes, answered that he intended to
make his best yet. :-)

@Neal: "Problemist" as in "composed at least one problem".

@Vilimantas:

How did you arrive at this figure? (I'm not disputing it, but I am curious to understand your reasoning.)

579... a kind of joke.
By the way, I checked it again today: still 579!

Indeed, but there are a few registered members with two and even three user accounts! :)

Yes of course, there are 579 registered members in Mat Plus list. If the person isn`t in the Mat Plus he doesn`t exist. If somebody doesn`t understand (or accept) he is a problemist, ne isn`t indeed.

Perhaps the title of this thread should be revised: "Number of relevant problemists worldwide?" :-)
