@Dan,

>"The composer knows his own thoughts on a problem, and is best equipped to 'document' it."

Maybe I can make my position more clear, by the following illustration...

Let's pretend that the historical portraits of Abe Lincoln and Jefferson Davis are two works of art.

Clearly, the value of each would depend greatly upon the outcome of the Civil War (in the short term, history is written by the victors).
But, ultimately, to pirate a phrase from Dr. Martin Luther King, the arc of time bends toward justice.
Lincoln's value would emerge, regardless of the war's outcome.
The result was never in doubt -- the only question was: how long would the injustice continue?

If we had access to their own thoughts on the issues of their day, we could certainly make a more informed judgement.
But, we certainly would reject the notion that Jefferson Davis was in a better position, than our best historians, to judge his own historical portrait.
It is also probable that Lincoln's own documentation of himself, had he lived to write it, would have fallen short (he likely would have directly addressed the audience of his present day, rather than historians, in his distant future).

ps: I just saw the new Lincoln movie yesterday, and my thoughts keep bending back to it.

KB: I agree that you are the best person to document your own problems

This is true of most composers.

KB: But, you may not be the best person to judge it.

Whether one is the 'best judge' of his/her own work is irrelevant. And whether 'history' will have the same appreciation 100 years from now is irrelevant.

Composer input is what separates the Album from other books. Thus an Album problem not only pleased the judges, but was also 'judged' as worthy by its composer(s).

Nuff said.

>"Composer input is what separates the Album from other books."

Are you suggesting that "composer input" is the unique purpose of the Album?
This is not an accurate claim:
a) Many have been asked to submit their own problems for a variety of books.
b) The Album, historically, did not exclusively rely upon self-nomination.
c) Still today, entries may be sent by someone other than the composer (especially following unfortunate circumstances).
d) The Album does not distinguish which composer submits joint work (if composer input were so important, it would not fail to distinguish between submission, and approval for submission).

The purpose of the Album is either to provide historical documentation (for what we consider the best problems of a given period), or to provide a competition (for points/titles).

>"Thus an Album problem not only pleased the judges, but was also 'judged' as worthy by its composer(s)."

In the context of a competition, I would agree that it may be an important distinction to consider the judgement of a composer.
However, the Album fails even to do this.

Consider that you and I might create a joint problem.
We might disagree as to whether it constitutes a worthy submission (to the Album).
However, it is highly doubtful that such a disagreement would necessitate a disagreement over whether to allow its submission.

The Album does not distinguish who sent the problem, nor does it record which of us considered it worthy.
This refutes your theory -- submission may not signify a self-appraised worthiness of the problem, by all parties.

The Album only records whether or not a specific set of judges (for a sub-Album, which has no clear definition) were pleased, beyond some threshold (set by a quota of entries).
It then quantifies this judgement into points, skewed to favor "orthodox studies."
Finally, it awards titles, without any care for how often your self-judgement of worthiness (based upon submission) proved successful.

Also, I must correct something I said:

KB>"I agree that you are the best person to document your own problems..."

In the context of this conversation, that remark was poorly worded.
I should have said, you are the best person to provide documentation for your own problems.
[edit: Sometimes, even this is not true -- you may not realize, or verbalize, that you have just pioneered a creative new theme... but, the future may be better able to provide documentation of the achievement.]

But, you are not necessarily the best person to historically document (or rank) your own problems.

You can't possibly be relied upon to judge your own problems -- you are not objective, you are not afforded the perspective of time, you may not be aware of anticipations, and you might wrongly presume soundness!
The future provides the best perspective, to document a composer's significant historical contribution(s).
The future which will ultimately decide the issue.

There is no historical precedent for relying upon a composer's self-appraisal.
Nobody is allowed to swap problems accepted to the Album, for those they personally consider superior.

The best you can do is to document your intentions, and provide some insight into your own judgement criteria.

KB: "Are you suggesting that "composer input" is the unique purpose of the Album?"

No. I'm saying that composer input is what makes an Album unique. Book authors may occasionally seek composer input, but not on a global scale.

KB: "This refutes your theory..."

The rare exception hardly constitutes a refutation.

KB: "You can't possibly ... judge your own problems -- you are not objective..."

Nor is anyone else. Time may provide the benefit of cooks and anticipations, but it cannot promise 'objective' assessments.

The endless future looks back upon the artist's work, and constantly begs to rediscover: how might this have contributed to our historical journey?
That is a far, far better question than any we mortals can ever hope to ask.

Trust everything to an eternal future -- the immortality of our work depends upon it (for judgement, and documentation).
We mortals, with small questions, can offer no such hope for our works (even the ones we recognize good), except in the long line of our successive generations.

Anyway, that concludes my secular sermon, for the day.
Amen?

In order to remove the main motive to submit unjustified huge numbers of compositions [„spam“] to Album sections without negative effects of limitation, post 33 contains the reform proposal to focus on quality by transferring WCCI principle to individual composing titles. „Reform“ means still to award them based on Album selections with the current 0 to 4 points scale by three judges.

Meanwhile, after publication of the latest Album 2004-6, time has come for testing whether this proposal may lead to practicable results.

The following compilation is ranking title holding composers by judgement points of their 12 highest rated compositions in FIDE Albums since 1980. „Newcomers“, not additionally represented with earlier compositions, are marked with asterisks (*).
Judgements for problems and studies have been regarded as equal. Unlike WCCI, those of joint compositions have been considered as far as they raise the final score. Their value has been divided by numbers of authors. If the number of included compositions surpasses the calculation standard of 12 then [e.g. 12,17 ; 12,33 ; 12,50], the resulting sum of points has been related to exact 12,00 Album judgements - usually they are a basic presupposition for composing titles nowadays.
