I don't like it so much either, it is a nice problem, but not a great one in my eyes. | | (23) Posted by Hauke Reddmann [Monday, Apr 28, 2014 14:12] | <return> <burp>
But then, what is the big difference between the Retter and
Speckmann problems? We might value the latter higher because
the economy is breathtaking, but the amount of "cheating"
is about the same, I think.
Obviously, there are two directions now:
- Less cheating. More material. E.g. the brilliant problem
(forgot author, as always, but one never forgets ideas)
where White can play a (Black) Nowotny but runs into a
(White) Grimshaw. Bit more than 4 pieces, but you actually
try that tries and all the thematic is so lucid I could
explain it to the n00b.
- Straight into cubism and abstract art. There are composers
that do the above mentioned snow king when they have finally
got a certain letter scheme correct, even if the ONLY
interesting part of that noodle salad is THAT nobody got
it yet. L'art pour l'art.
(to be concluded) | | (24) Posted by Hauke Reddmann [Monday, Apr 28, 2014 14:20] | There are even thematic tries that are unplausible on
the ground that they are thematic! Half of white
line combinations consists of them. Who with only
a bit of knowledge on wLK will play a piece into
a needed line? If the solution is playing the piece
to the only place where it doesn't stand in the way -
insult to injury added when half of the possible
places are plugged with white pawns - this heavily
mars the impression. (Recommended for the young
aspiring wLK composer: Study the work of Herbert
Ahues. And then study it again. His name is almost
synonymous with "plausible tries".) Since there are
half a dozen thematic and constructive tricks that
help, I won't go into detail.
