Kings&Pawns AUW

Here is a brand new orthodox AUW in the Kings&Pawns category, published today. It seems the first two K&P AUW examples in endgames were published at about same time, at the end of 2009: Costeff (BQ, WS, WB, WR, in a single line) and Dydukh (white AUW in different lines).

Gady Costeff pointed out to me the following studies when I asked him about that last year:

Kh5 Pb2 b6 c6 g4 g5 g6 h4 - Kg2 Pb3 f2 g7 (8+4)
H. Ginninger
Ceskoslovensky Sach 1933 (!)
White to move and win

1.b7 f1S! 2.b8B! Kf3 3.Bd6 Ke4 4.c7 Kd5 5.Bh2 Sxh2 6.c8Q wins
or 1...Kh1 2.b8R! f1S 3.Rxb3 wins

(but dual: 5.Bh2 isn't unique)

Ke3 Pc3 d4 e2 g6 - Kb1 Pb2 c4 d5 (5+4)
G. Sonntag
Magyar Sakkélet 1967
White to move and win

1.g7 Ka2 2.g8R! Kb3 3.Kd2 b1S+ 4.Kc1 Sxc3 5.Rb8+ Ka3 6.e3 wins
or 1...Kc2 2.g8B! wins
or 1...Kc1 2.g8Q! wins

Mixed AUW, although Sonntag omitted the 1...Kc1 line for some reason.

I think Costeff is first to show all in a single main line.

#4

Here is another K&P AUW #4 from the same author. This time there are two pairs of promotions by the same WPs in two variations. There is also a fifth promotion (WQ), and the key is fine for this kind of task.

Without wanting to spam, I can recommend the book "Kings & Pawns". It contains a few AUWs with that material, although mostly in helpmates.

The following masterpiece is no.380 in the abovementioned book.

Kc8 Pd2 e4 e5 f4 g3 g4 - Kd5 Pb5 d3 e2 f3 (7+5)
Christer Jonsson
Springaren 1993, 4th prize (!)
h#4, 4 solutions (1.1.3... & 1.1.1...)

Sadly the book mostly omits award details.

Solution:
1.Kxe4 e6 2.e1Q e7 3.Qa1 e8Q+ 4.Qe5 Qxe5 mate
1.Kc6 e6 2.e1R e7 3.Rc1 e8R 4.Rc5 Re6 mate
1.Kxe4 e6 2.e1B e7 3.Bf2 e8B 4.Bd4 Bc6 mate
1.Kxe4 e6 2.e1S e7 3.Sc2 e8S 4.Sd4 Sf6 mate
Babson task

To show how difficult a Kings&Pawns AUW is, the following example is a good demonstration.

Kc8 Pb6 b7 c4 d6 d7 - Kc6 Pc5 (6+2)
Edgar Holladay
Illinois Chess Bulletin 1982
Mate in 4, 3 solutions

Even in 1982, three solutions and solution duals were necessary to show this task. The problems we see in this thread should be considered masterpieces.

Solution:
1.d8S+ Kxd6! 2.b8Q+ Ke7 3.Qf4 Ke8 4.Qf7 mate
1.b8B Kxb6 2.d8Q+ Ka6 3.Ba7/Qd7/Qe8 (dual)
1.d8R Kxb6 2.b8Q+ Ka6 3.Qb5+/Qb7+/Qb1/Qb2/Qb3/Kc7/Kd7/d7/Ra7/Re8/Rf8/Rg8/Rh8 (dual)
